successful propranolol treatment!

I wanted to share this information in case it might help someone. My 4 month-old daughter started propranolol last Wednesday (Jan. 28) and we are already seeing great improvments with her H's! She has 3 - two are very small and one is a larger superficial and deep H in between her eyes. Her big H had decreased by .5 cm before we left the hospital on Friday night. The color and texture have changed from bright, blood red to a softer, matte pinky-red. The swelling has gone down considerably also. One of the other H's hasn't changed and then the 3rd one has completely lost its bumpiness and is now flat. We see subtle changes every single morning! She has tolerated the propranolol very, very well.

I've detailed our roller coaster ride at www.ruthiesadventures.wordpress.com if anyone would like to find out more and/or see some pictures. I am planning on adding more before/after type photos as soon as I have some time.

My husband and I are very pleased with the results and are happy that we made the decision to try propranolol. We went to several doctors and were given many different opinions. I was even told by one doctor that propranolol would likely NOT work for my daughter's type of H.

Good luck to those of you still exploring your options and seeing specialists! I know that it's an exhausting process. For what it's worth, you can add our daughter's story to the growing list of successful propranolol treatment.

That is wonderful news. My son has a facial hemangioma as well, on his cheek/eye area. He also had an MRI done to make sure it was not in his eye and brain. We see our pediatric dermatologist again tomorrow and my husband and I plan to ask about propranolol treatment. He is currently on prednisolone, but we are dealing with awful side effects. I am eager to see if propranolol would work for his H. It is great to see and hear about success stories with this treatment. I look forward to seeing more progress pictures on your blog. Thanks for posting!

We are in Atlanta, GA. My daughter is about the 5th or 6th treated with propranolol by our doctor. It's the first that our pediatrician has heard of it, so her entire practice is pretty interested in it as is our pediatric opthalmologist. It's such a promising treatment! We feel very lucky that it's working so well!

Hi Dawn,

I am also from Canada (Manitoba), have you heard of any good specialists in Canada for H? My daughter has one on her forehead, and we aren't sure what we are going to do about it yet. A dermatologist suggested Aldara cream........we haven't used it yet b/c it's an imunomodulater, which makes me nervous.

ruthiesmom -
What doctor do you see in Atlanta? My 8 month old is on her 4th laser treatment, and after not seeing results, we are seeking alternatives.
Thanks!

We are seeing Dr. Leslie Lawley at Emory. She's a pediatric dermatologist.

I am in Toronto, Canada. We received treatment from the specialist working in the "Hospital of Sick Children". Our physician's name is Dr. E. Pope working in dermotology clinic. She is a H specialist. We are also under propanolol treatment and had great result.

Hi Ladies,

I am in Australia and we have seen a Peadiatric Dermatologist in our childrens hospital and started Propanolol treatment for our daughter a month ago. She has a strawberry H covering her nose and spreading towards her eyes hence the need for treatment at 2 weeks of age. We have since in that month seen a 2mm shrink from edge to edge and a substantial amount of regression under her nose. We see new "patches" of regression every few days that start as a small dot and then regress further. We have been told she will be on propanolol for at least 6 months but whilst the results can be slow every time family members see her they can see a huge difference which is comforting.

Glad others are having success as well ..

xo
