Does Timolol come in an ointment? Doc prescribed eye drops for lip?
Hi,
Does anyone have any experience with using the eye drops on the lips? I just got the medicine tonight for my 5 week old son and the pharmacist said that the doc put in for the eye drops. I thought I was getting something like vaseline. Does Timolol come in anything other than eye drops? Thanks in advance, Jeff |
Hi and welcome!
I do remember another parent writing in through the expert section about that and I looked up some studies. "aqueous solution applied with figertips" was a phrase I remembered, because I thought, "really?" Call the doc tomorrow and be SURE, but this might very well be correct. Missy |
Thanks Missy.
I called the pharmacist again and just like you mention in your post, she said apply with finger tips. So After reading your post and talking to the pharmacist, I opened the bottle (didn't want to open it until I was comfortable we had the correct med) and this stuff wasn't as liquidy as I thought it would be. It was actually pretty thick. I applied it to the hemangioma and will do twice daily for the next 3 weeks until his next appointment. I'm hoping this is all he needs. Next step would be propranolol if timolol doesn't help. Jeff |
my dr. prescribed timolol drops (yes, they are eye drops for glaucoma, i believe.) for the side of my daughter's head and a gel solution for her lip. in my experience the lip gel didn't stay on well, but the drops we used on the side of her head definitely helped. he told me to be sure to lubricate her lips with vasoline or aquaphor if they looked like they were getting dried out, to prevent ulceration on her lip. he said to wait at least a half an hour after applying timolol to do this.

Jeff,
Glad we could help. Come back and let us know how things work out! Good luck to everyone! Missy |
I'll stop back in a few weeks and give an update.

Our MD referred us to a compounding pharmacy where a cream was created. The label just says Timolol 1%.

UPDATE
It's now been almost 2 months and my son's upper lip hemangioma hasn't gotten any larger. The timolol has so far kept the growth under control. The specialist told us at our 3 week check up in March that everything looks good and to stay on the timolol. Next appointment is middle of May. We have our fingers crossed that it doesn't grow or ulcerate. Jeff |
Jeff,
Thanks for the update! Glad your little one is hanging in there! Missy |
Thank you for the update Jeff. We look forward to hearing good news in a couple weeks.
