Default Laser Questions

My daughter is 9 months and has a hemongioma on her cheek. It hasn't grown in the last 3 months and according to our dermatologist it has started to show signs of involution (see pic). My husband and I are torn between waiting it out or going for the laser treatment. I just wanted to get a few moms opinions that have done laser. Did they put your child under general anesthesia, if so for how long? How many treatments did they do?

Obviously we haven't gone for the consult with the laser dr yet or we would have asked him these

Any info or before and after pics would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

In my opinion, it does look like the hemangioma is involuting. It looks a little deflated (if that makes sense) and the color looks like it's greying from the center out which is how it usually happens. There is however no way to predict how quickly or completely it will involute. Lasers could help with the color. Honestly, at this age I would recommend that if you decide to go with lasers you insist on anesthesia being used. My son had numerous lasers without anesthesia on his nasal tip h. Around a year of age is when he started being traumatized by them and we decided to stop them. Many doctors tend to want to use a pappoose board on a child this age. Knowing what I know now I would never agree to it.

my daughter has a large hemangioma on her right arm, and has laser done on an ulceration to help it heal. they did put her under but for less than 5 minutes cause the area was so small. there were no complications and her arm healed so quickly. i would never have my child go though it without being put under though no matter what the dr tells you!

hello, in my opinion the h. may be too raised to benefit a lot from laser...but that is something you can ask the specialists about. I would encourage you to contact Dr. Nelson from ask the expert section for his opinion.

My son did have laser for his h. You can see pictures of Nicholas progress on the the (msn) vb support group site. http://groups.msn.com/vascularbirthm...on=get_threads on page 22 of pictures under Nicholas' segmental hemangioma. He was under g.a. for 7 of 8 laser tx., because of the size and location.

If you have any questions or need help, please let me know.

Thanks for the response! We actually sent some pics to Dr. Waner (thanks the Sherri) and he recommends excision since it is raised and has some scar tissue due to earlier ulceration. We are starting the paper trail and hoping insurance will cover some if not all!
