Default doctors appointment - help!

I've posted on this site before about my birthmark, but I'll summarize anyway. I have had a dark colored patch basically on my right buttcheek since I was about 8-10 (ish?). I don't remember it before that, but it could have been there. It covers the whole thing, so it's pretty big... and I'm really embarrassed about it! Even more so than embarrassment, however, I'm nervous about things like skin cancer or something - so I've been wanting to get it checked out since I was like 15. With going in to get it checked out for that stuff, I've wanted to check out how much it would cost to have it removed (if at all possible). I haven't told my parents (I'm 19), but I told my mom I want to have a preliminary dermatology exam just to get checked for skin cancer (I told her it was because my friend said everyone should once a year.. lame, I know).

My appointment is tomorrow. I was wondering if I could get some help on pointers for the exam. What's going to happen? I've never had a dermatology exam, so I don't know what to expect. Also, what are some questions I should ask? I feel super underprepared for this!

Thanks for any help you can give!

Try not to sweat it. I've gone in to docs before and said, "I'm so not ready for this, I don't even know what to ask you!!" they get it.

More than likely, the doctor will just want to do a visual exam at first. Meaning, he'll look at it. He might even put on the big magnifying glasses thingy. But for anything further, he'd have to discuss your options and make another appointment.

Let us know later today what he says!!

Hey! Just letting you know how it went. The doctor said that it was a Becker's Nevus and that I have nothing to worry about with skin cancer or anything. However, there's nothing I can do to get rid of it really... because I'm a little darker skinned (people say I look italian), so if they did anything, it would take the pigment completely out and it would be even more noticeable than now.

Well, that doesn't sound like bad news. At least you know what it is exactly.

At http://birthmark.org/experts.php we have a makeup expert who might be able to help you figure out a strategy to cover it, should you need to. If you're like me, I can't tuck my whole rear end into the bathing suit anymore!! LOL

Also, you're not scared of the dermatologist anymore, are you?

Thanks for the update! If VBF can ever help, just let us know.

Missy
