Insurace Issues

I think the # one issue that comes up on message boards and in my email inbox is insurance coverage/finanical issues. Please, please don't take the first "NO" from your insurance co. You have rights and there are steps to winning approval for seeing specialists, having your child evaluated and treated. Basia is our Insurance Expert and she has wonderful resources that can help you move in the right direction. Often insurance companies will use the term "cosmetic" to respond to claims regarding vascular lesions. This is an old way of thinking and it can often be an automatic reply to claims without considering the issues medically. Your case needs to be presented with all the supporting information that your child's case/your case needs medical intervention. Often the doctor's office needs to be aware of the billing codes they are using too.

It is worth posting your insurance issues in forums such as this and the one on MSN. Many times, if you will post your insurance company's name, someone will have experience with that particular company's policy.

Also, if you have gotten your insurance company to cover treatments, we would like to know. It will help so many other parents in similar situations. You can write to contact@birthmark.org with any info and I'd encourage everyone to keep copious records.
