Does ulceration really mean involution?

I've been told that the ulceration on my daughter's lip is a good sign because it means that the H is starting to involute. These were both very conservative dermatologists that said this, and it went along with their recommendation of "wait it out". I would be thrilled if it really is involuting, but that process can take a long time, and if it's ulcered, I feel like treatment is needed. Also, my pediatrician said it's still proliferating, so I'm not even sure who is right.

Hemangiomas typically ulcerate during periods of rapid growth. Ulcerations can be painful, plus they can leave scars. I would look for treatment - where are you located? Maybe someone here can give you ideas of specialists to see if you give a general location.

We're in Augusta. We saw someone local today who prescribed some antibiotic ointment. That's great, but not really addressing the underlying issue, which is a lip H prone to ulceration. Thankfully we have appointments with Dr. Hochman Monday and at Emory on Tuesday (she does propranolol) so I feel like we'll really get some good opinions next week. I'm all for being conservative, but not when my baby is in pain and risking infection and scarring.

My daughters lip ulcerated at 2 months and was in extreme pain from it. I haven't heard that it means it is involuting, more so that it is rapidly growing. A specialist told me that it was caused by the Hemangioma growing faster than the skin could cover. I have been told by the current doctor I am seeing, Dr. Waner, that ulcerations always leave scars. We had our daughter's lip lasered when it ulcerated when we were not doing any treatment for her Hemangioma at the time. I would suggest laser or some sort of treatment for the ulceration. We also were given some numbing ointment to put on it before feeding.

our daughters ulcerated and the way our pediatric dermatologist explained it to us was that it was growing so rapidly that the skin doesnt have time to grow with it, so it opens. and as fas as i have researched involution is the last phase of the growing process..so im my opion they are not the same thing. Our daughter is now on Propranolol if you ever want to see pics just let me know!

Ulcerations are typically a result of the skin breaking down from rapid prolification. Ulcers have been known to occur during involution too.

Ulcers are very painful and can be destructive. Laser helped heal my son's and up to that point it just would not heal. It is recommended that the area be kept moist with aquapher or zinc oxide product. Look for signs of infection.

When my daughter's H ulcerated, she was in a lot of pain, and that's when our specialist, whom we considered to be quite conservative, recommended removal surgery.

Maysie started on propranolol last week, and it is definitely smaller already. I feel positive that we'll have a great outcome and no more ulcers.
