Default Diaper Area Hemangioma

Hello. I am new to the forum. My 3 month old has a very painful ulcerated hemangioma in her groin area. Does anyone have any experience with this type of hemangioma. I took her to a Pediatric Dermatologist is NJ yesterday and have begun treatment. I could use some advice from anyone with experience. Her pain is killing me!

There are LOTS of parents who are going to chime in soon. If you run a search in the forum, you'll find a good number of posts about diaper area hemangiomas.

What treatment did your ped derm suggest? Are you keeping it moist or dry?

Hi Missy!

Thanks I will try that.

The doctor gave her an injection in 4 spots directly into the hemangioma. You can only imagine how that went! Then she is on a treatment of Metrogel twice a day, Renegrex once a day and 5% Lidocaine mixed with Aquaphor 4 times per day as needed. The lidocaine is the only way we can touch her to clean it out. All treatments are then to be covered with Triple Paste. She also suggested thin Duoderm especially if I know a poopy diaper is coming. I am going to try the duoderm tonight for the first time to see if it helps in keeping that away from the ulcer.

Where are you?

Could you write to Dr Serena, our wound care expert? He's here:

Did the duoderm work?

Poor thing.... that's all just terrible!!

My 9 month old has an ulcered hemangioma in her diaper area too. The pain she is going through is undescribable. I'm still in the process of getting her treated. To "protect" the area I have been told to use a Nexcare spray (liquid bandage). I see that it is protecting well, but not subsiding the pain at all.

I've been told our next step may be to use a steroid orally. Any effects or cautions I should be aware of? Any long term effects?

Smile hemangioma in the diaper area

I am so glad I saw your post! My 8 week old granddaughter has this problem, and it was sheer torture to hear her scream when she had a bowel movement! My daughter is now using an antibiotic salve on the hemangioma & covering that with a bandage called Tegaderm. It was like a miracle! It keeps the feces from contacting the skin & gives the area a chance to heal! Immediate relief!
