Hemangioma on bottom of foot

I just found this site and am so thankful for it. I hope some of you may be able to give us some guidance. I have a 12 year old daughter who has had a hemangioma on the bottom of her foot since birth. We were told by her pediatrician that it would fade as she grew, but it has only grown proportionally with her. It never gave her any trouble untill about 1 1/2 years ago when she would complain off and on that it hurt; usually after her dance class or biking, etc. In Novemeber of '09 it became very painful, very quickly, so much so that she wasn't able to bear any weight on the foot at all. Well, after seeing a multitude of dr's. we ended up at Emory University where they were confident that a scleosising injection would resolve the matter. We have had 2 injections now, the last one being bleomycin, but my daughter still has a lot of pain, can't bear any weight on the foot and the size of the hemangioma is about the same if not slightly bigger. We checked with an ortho. surgeon but he won't touch it because of its location.

Have any of you dealt with hemangioma/lmyphangioma on the plantar aspect of the foot? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Normally, hemangiomas involute before a child reaches twelve. What you describe sounds a lot like an AVM, rather than a hemangioma.

I would start off by asking an expert here http://birthmark.org/experts.php and make sure you have the correct diagnosis. Ask about more aggressive treatment plans.

Ditto what missy said. Often the term hemangioma is used to describe all vascular lesions, which can be misleading on what to expect and cause concern with treatment options/recommendations. I really encourage you to consult with the ask the expert regarding obtaining proper diagnosis. WHere are you located?

Thank you for your recommendation.

We are in Atlanta, Ga. The doctors at Emory did say that the area is a mix of lymphatic and hemangioma/vasular components.
