Will my subsequent children have hemangioma?

Just curious, my first born has a hemangioma, what are the chances a subsequent child will have one?

I have 3 out of 4 with hemangiomas but I guess it's not supposed to run in families. They are most common with light-skinned children, girls and preemies and I have all 3, so our doctor attributes it more to that than to the fact they are all sisters. My oldest doesn't have one. My 5 year old has a lip hemangioma. She has had oral steroid treatment as well as surgery and now laser. One of my twin 2 year olds has a pretty extensive one on her hand and it's going away on its own. Her twin sister has a small superficial one on her arm. We got the 3 our 4 special!

My daughter 3.5yrs has a large complex h on her upper eyelid and temple area. She has already had operations and more for the future, so I was terrified of it happening again. I was told it wasnt hereditary. My son was born last year and he has none. Hope this gives you some reassurance x

Smurph- I'm curious, you said your 5 yr old has lip hemi and you are doing laser! My daughter has one above her upper left lip - we just started laser 2 weeks ago, curious how laser is going for you?

L01- glad to hear that- although they say not hereditary I don't know if I believe that - I had one as a baby and my aunt and uncle had one too! Now my daughter! Glad your baby boy is hemangioma free!

She hasn't had her first laser treatment yet. It's on March 14th. She had surgery in June to remove some scar tissue she has in her lip from an ulceration she had as a baby. The laser is the last step for us...she still has redness between her nose and her lip (it's pretty faded) but they don't think it will go away much more on its own, so we decided to do the laser. 1 of my 4 had a hemangioma. Just from observation by a specialist that has seen 1000's of cases over the years... he said he believes there is a higher chance of having them run in families.

My son doesn't have any but both my daughters do so we're 2/3 here.

One of my brother's had a hemangioma on his eyelid as a baby...he's the only one out of 5 siblings...not sure if that's the norm or not. His was not very large, but did require some patching to strengthen the eye because is had started to invade his vision. Now I have a daughter with a hemangioma on her hairline...much bigger than my brother's was. She was also a 26 week preemie though, which I know is a risk factor.

My older daughter has a very small angioma (red bump) on her upper lip, but nothing that ever required intervention. My 1 year old has a hemangioma on her bottom that ulcerated. I must say that I am scared that if I have more babies they might have hemangiomas! At least now I know what they are!!

It seems hemangiomas affect more girls than boys. I really wonder why this is. I really wish they would figure out a connection and what causes hemangiomas. I'm very interested in finding out.
