Default Hemangioma on head--6 weeks old--New!

Hello everyone! My son Charles was diagnosed with a hemangioma by his pediatrician at his one month check up. It is on the side of his head, and it consists of a red spot and also a lump underneath. I sent a pic and info to Dr. Levitin last night, but I also wanted to post on here to see if anyone else has any advice to send our way. His next pediatrician appt is not until Nov. 30, but I am tempted to call and see if I can bring him in sooner, as I think the hemangioma has grown quite a bit in the last two weeks (more of the "lump" and not flat like it started out). I am thinking that we need to get a referral to see a specialist, but I am not sure if we can just start with a pediatric dermatologist in our area, or if we should jump to one of the specialists listed on this website. I can't figure out how to attach a picture...my files are too big and I am not sure how to shrink them...

Thanks in advance for any help, advice, or support!

Hi and welcome,

If you will let us know where are you located, we'll see if we can find a specialist in your area. Sometimes, a local physician will be able to implement a good treatment plan, but it's always good to have a backup plan or second opinion.

If you'd like, you can email your photo to contact@birthmark.org and I'll shrink it down and attach here if you like. Put your username in the email or subject line, so I can find the right thread (I do get random babies sometimes ... have no idea what thread they go to ).

Congrats on your new little bundle of joy!! I bet he's cute!!

Missy

Thanks Missy--I sent the photo just now. I am located in Central Indiana, just west of Indianapolis. The closest doctors I saw listed on the website are in Chicago. We have family in Chicago and NW Indiana, so that might work out just fine, unless there are doctors closer that anyone could recommend.

Here's your photo!

Other parents may be able to suggest someone in the area. Perhaps you can decide after your next appointment.

If you are in Indianapolis you want to see Dr. Anita Haggstrom and Dr. Kiersten Turchin with IU Health. They are the best Ped Derms in the city. We see them for my daughter's PELVIS syndrome. They have a duel clinic the third Tues of every month in Carmel.

Thank you so much for the recommendations--I will definitely talk to his pediatrician about getting a referral to see one of the doctors you mentioned!

I'm sorry you had to wait, but our families always come through for us! They totally ROCK!

Let us know how things go from here. Come back and give us an update.

If you are seeing rapid growth, do call and see if you can get your appt. moved up. Let me know if you have any q's. We do have a list of questions to ask your doctor on this site or if you can't find it, email me and I will attach for you in an email.

It has definitely grown in the last week, since we took the picture that was posted. I will email you for that list of questions--thanks for the advice, and any other advice or support is still welcome!
