Propranolol for Hemangioma
Hello!
I have posted before but I am writing an update on my son's hemangioma on his nose and neck. We started giving him Propranolol at the end of January 2010 when he was 8 months old. He has been taking it 2 times a day and we have seen a considerable difference! We are very pleased with the results and are going to continue giving him Propranolol per our dermatologist's reccomendation for a couple of more months. Levi has not had any complications due to the meds so we are glad we went ahead and put him on Propranolol. Wow. Your son's hemangioma looks great! I'm so happy Propranolol is working for him! My 5 month old has been on Propranolol for 2 months now. His hemangioma is on his nose, almost in the same place as your son. I haven't seen results that are quite so dramatic as with your son. There are some flesh colored areas but it's still pretty red. But it's only been a couple of months, and after seeing your pics, I'm so hopeful! Thanks for posting!

Hi. He looks great! We have had the same experiences with propanolol. My daughter takes it 3 times a day. She was down to 2 but we think her weight is out doing the propanolol so instead of increasing the amount in each dose we started back with the 3rd dose. How old is your son now?

Deep hemangioma on left eyebrow towards nose Started propanolol Feb. 11th, 2010 Off of propanolol aprox. June 2011 Takes 3 doses per day at 1.3ml 2nd Weaning of prop. not a success back on it March 22. The third picture of Levi kind of shows the hemangioma on his neck, which thanks to the Propranolol has decreased dramatically! It was raised and very puffy...
Levi is 16 months old so he has been taking propranolol for almost 8 months now... Hopefully both of his hemangiomas will shrink completely and go away! lol I am just glad people quit staring at his nose! :0) Last edited by Kellyl : 09-13-2010 at 02:49 AM.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site. My son Julian has 2 hemangiomas, one on his forehead and one on the left side of his butt. They just keep getting bigger (he is 13 weeks old) with no signs of stopping. The one on his forehead has turned a darker red with occasional scabbing and flaking, while the other is still a bright cherry red.
We have an appointment with a specialist at UCSF (Dr. Frieden) on October 4 and I plan to ask her about propranolol. Did any of you have difficulty getting your doctor to prescribe it? Have you noticed any side effects? Were your kids hospitalized for the first few days of treatment? Levi looks amazing, I cannot even see the one on his neck, and his nose looks great. He is truly a beautiful little boy! I'm trying to figure out how to post some pics of Julian, any tips?

Thank you! I send the pics I want to put of Levi to contact@birthmark.org I think.... (I'm pretty sure that's right!)
Anyway, when I took levi to a Pediatric Plastic Surgeon, they never suggested Propranolol. However, when I took him to a Pediatric Dermatologist, he highly reccommended Propranolol. Good Luck and keep us updated!!

Carii: We've been seeing Dr. Frieden since my son was 2 months old. He's now 5 months old. First she started him on steroids, but the side effects for my son were AWFUL. A month later, the hemangioma started getting bumpy so we stopped the steroids and she put him on Propranolol. He did not have to be hospitalized at 3 months. She just wanted us to watch out for side effects. (At 2 months however, she would have wanted him to be hospitalized.) Propranolol seems to be working well for him. There have been no side effects. Hope the appointment goes well! Keep us updated!
