Smile Happy with PWS

Hi there

I am a 28 year old female with a PWS on the left cheek of my face. I had treatment between the ages of 2-14, it helped a little (lighter) but the reality is it will never go away. I chose as a teen I did not want treatment anymore because I had grown to be happy with who I am and stopped caring about what other people thought about me. Now days I still dont care that people are staring and those without birthmarks who feel they have to give advice, get a short sharp I am who I am and I am happy with who I am if you dont like it then go away. I work in a retail envronment and only wear makeup on special occasions due to I dont want to wear a mask everyday I want to be me.

My biggest triamph was serving a male in a video store who when I first started working there, would not be served by me nad could not look at me. I asked the other staff if they coud keep busy away from the counter so that he had to come to me to be served - he sent his son up, there was a R16 movie amoung the pile so I made the child get this man to the counter and explained by law why the child could not get out the dvd. He refused to look at me but got the dvds and left. I did this same process over a period of weeks and talked away, looked at him at all times and if he glanced up I smiled. After a few weeks he started to look at me while he was talking and soon enough we were able to hold a conversation about movies. I never judged for the way he looked and was always friendly to him. In the end he would ask advise about what movies to watch, would always look at my face and always wanted to be served by me.

I am happy with who I am and will be getting married next year to my husband to be of 9 years. If you put your mind to it you can do anything. Yes we may have to work harder to get people to be nicer to us just because we don't look "normal" if there really is such a thing.
