The Vascular Birthmarks Foundation and Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York to Hold 2023 Annual Conference and Super Clinic in New York City in October

Annual Event Will Provide Free Expert Services and Consultations, as well as Psychosocial Support for Individuals and Families Affected by a Vascular Birthmark, Anomaly, and/or Related Syndrome (VBARS)

LATHAM, NY (September 29, 2023) – Over 80 people affected by a VBARS (vascular birthmark, anomaly, and/or related syndrome) will receive free access to a multidisciplinary team of medical experts as part of the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation’s (VBF) 27th Annual Conference and Super Clinic in NYC, from October 6-8, 2023.

Co-hosted by Roy G. Geronemus, M.D., Director of the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, and Clinical Professor of Dermatology, New York University Medical Center, and Robert J. Rosen, M.D., Director of the AVM Center of New York at Lenox Hill, this annual event is the only one of its kind offering life-changing services to individuals and families with any type of VBARS (vascular birthmark, anomaly, and/or related syndrome). The services will include: free consultations, free laser treatments, free ultrasounds, free dental exams, informal diagnoses, informal treatment plans, psychotherapy sessions, and lectures regarding the latest information for diagnosing and treating VBARS.

“The upcoming Vascular Birthmark Conference is an extraordinary and unique opportunity for patients with vascular birthmarks to receive consultations, diagnostic testing and laser treatments by world experts with state-of-the-art technologies,” said Dr. Geronemus. “This conference is unprecedented with its national and international group of experts in its scope and goals in providing advice and treatment to patients with vascular birthmarks.”

VBF’s 2023 Physician of the Year is Giacomo Colletti, M.D., D.D.S., Director of VBF Europe and VBF Italy. Dr. Colletti is being recognized for dedicating his career to advancing the diagnosis and treatment of VBARS, and for his outstanding and innovative techniques relative to diagnosing and treating the most problematic VBARS—the Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). He has pioneered a new Electro-Sclerotherapy technique, which has brought hope for patients with AVMs.

For almost 30 years, Linda Rozell-Shannon, Ph.D., President and Founder of the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation, has been a champion for the cause of vascular birthmarks. VBF is the No. 1 non-profit organization in the world supporting those affected by a VBARS. Dr. Linda and VBF are changing lives through free expert consultations, the latest treatment and diagnostic options, and psychosocial and support.

“We are a mission-focused organization,” explained Dr. Linda. “Our generous hosts, sponsors, and all the attending medical experts donate their time, expertise, and technology to serve individuals and families with any type of VBARS including hemangiomas, port-wine stain birthmarks, lymphatic malformations, arteriovenous malformations, venous malformations, KTS, PHACES, CLOVES, CMTC, and Sturge-Weber Syndrome, among all others. We turn no patients or families away.”

Anthony DiMattia–who lives with a Port Wine Stain birthmark–will be attending the VBF 2023 Conference and Super Clinic in NYC, and it will be his fourth VBF Super Clinic. Anthony explained that because not much was known back in the ‘60s, there were no resources to help deal with it. Most doctors told his mother to leave it alone and over time it may go away.

“Over time, my PWS didn’t go away, it actually became more pronounced in my 40’s,” said Anthony, who now serves as National President for the American Merchant Marine Veterans Association.“Knowing that each of us is uniquely different, it is comforting to have the VBF be part of your outlook in life!”

Lorraine Patton, who was treated at the 2023 VBF Free Laser Clinic in Houston, Texas, left with more than just a free laser treatment experience.

“The VBF has empowered me to speak openly and share my experiences about living with a vascular birthmark,” said Lorraine. “It has provided me with a strong support network of people that understand me. It has given me a sense of purpose. I now confidently identify as a person living with a Port-Wine Stain birthmark.”
