New and Unsure
I have a 5 month old son who was born at 36 weeks. Shortly after he was born a hemangioma appeared on his belly. The doctor told us that it will go away on it's own and the only reason we would need to see a dermatologist is if it is irritated by his pants.

About a month ago I noticed a bump on his upper lip. I thought that maybe he hit his lip with a toy and it would go never did. I went to the doctor today and was told it is another hemangioma. This one goes to the inside of his lip, so it really isn't a cosmetic concern, but there are other obvious concerns. She told me that I can wait until my next appointment, which is in 3 weeks for his 6 month check up, and get a second opinion. Well, she found out the appointment is with her, so she told me I can get a second opinion to see if a plastic surgeon is necessary, but typically they go away on their own. So here I I go back for a second opinion??? Do I just find a plastic surgeon??? Do I go in for the second opinion and ask for a referral to a surgeon regardless of what the doctor says?? I guess that I've started reading and am reading about the chance of internal hemangioma when there are multiple external ones. I've read that with lip hemangioma that referral and surgery is necessary. I'm kinda starting to freak out and need help from moms who have been through this.

Hi and welcome!

Where are you located? I think you need to be seen by a specialist. Typically, hemangioma appear closer to birth, not at 4 months, even factoring in his early delivery.

We are near Chicago. I have another doctor's appointment set up for next Tuesday. I'm thinking I'm just going to ask for a referral. Luckily it appears there are some good doctors at Children's Memorial.

We have an appointment with Dr. Annette Wagner at Children's Memorial on Thursday. I can see it getting worse, so I'm very anxious!!!
