Default questions about PWS

Hi! I'm 29 years old and I have had a red birthmark on my left leg (running from my ankle up to my knee) all my life. My mom brought me to doctors before but they said that treatment wouldn't really take it all out. Besides, it wasn't a really big with me. Now that I'm about to get married and have plans of having kids, I have a couple of questions that some of you might want to help me with:

1. Are birthmarks hereditary?
2. I've read that PWS that occur in limbs may have K-T Syndrome. From the things I read about that, it seems that "things" grow from the limbs. I've never had anything wrong with my leg. It's just red! Should I worry about getting K-T Syndrome?

Well, that's about it. I'm just curious. Hope some of you could help.

There is no evidence to support that birthmarks are hereditary, but research is always being done.

If you have shown no symptoms of KT, I wouldn't worry about it. Many people have PWS on their limbs with no other complications or syndromes being involved. As long as you know what to look for, don't anticipate trouble!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!!

Hi Katie,

I am 23 with facial PWS/SWS.

I agree with Missy as far as research has found PWS is not gentic and can not be passed on to your children. I know several people that have PWS that have had children. Being on your leg should be no different then being on your face.

I also agree that since you have not had any problems with your leg you probably do not have KTS. If you notice it getting darker, lumpy, or starts to hurt I would strongly suggest getting it looked at. Hormones have been linked to haveing PWS start to grow. So keep a watch on it. Most cases it grows going into puberty or medapause. Every case is going to be different so it is really hard to say.

I hope this helps and good luck with the wedding.

I have a PWS that covers half of my face. I have been blessed with a beautiful wife. About a year or so ago I was worrying about whether or not birthmarks were hereditary. I have only heard that they are not and I now have a beautiful, if I do say so myself, ten month old son without a PWS. I really don't believe you have anything to worry about.
