Default New here. hemangioma on sons tongue

Hi. I am Teri. My son Josh is 9. He has a quite large/deep hemangioma on his tongue (into the back of his throat). We have monitored it up until now. It seems to be growing. Went in yesterday for another MRI and the Dr. wants to discuss laser treatment. Has anyone dealt with or seen hemangioma on the tongue? Does laser surgery seem to work in shrinking hemangiomas? It is inside his mouth so my main concern is not cosmetic. If it doesn't go completely away, we are ok with that (i guess). My concern is physical problems (breathing, eating, etc.). Just don't want to see it grow anymore. Anybody have advise? Thank You so much

Hi troby,

First of all welcome to the group.

I have had laser treatment on my upper gum of my PWS (Port Wine Stain) birthmark with a C02 laser I think. So far it has not been very effective. I think that would be the same laser that the doctor probably would use on the tounge. If so I would not recommend it. I would recommend getting another opinion.

There are a couple things you can do. First, under resource section at the top of this page, do a physican search for a doctor in your area that might specials in birthmarks.

Second, on the front of this website there is a section on the left hand side. I suggest writing a message to the Ask the surgeon Dr. Levintin. This doctor works with Dr. Waner. Both are plastic surgeons, but Dr. Waner is orignally an ENT doctor. If surgery is possible this two doctors would be able to tell you. I have had plastic surgery from them and highly recommend them. They are in the top of either field. Contact info for Dr. Waner is in the same section in the resource page in New York City.

If you need any other info just ask we are all here for you.

Hi Teri,
My daughter also had a venous malformation on her tongue and Dr. Waner and Dr. Levitin performed laser treatments on it last summer with fabulous results. My daughter is 20 years old and her tongue continued to get a little larger every year and it started to effect her swallowing and airway. Her tongue was actually much smaller and pinker after the laser treatments. So good luck. We think the world of Dr. Waner, Dr. Levitin and all of his staff.

Smile vascular malformation on my tounge

Hi, my name is Courtney and I have (or had ) a venous vascular malformation on my tongue, floor of my mouth and my soft palate (or throat). My hemangioma was monitored for about 12 years by annual MRIs and my doctor consistently wanted to "wait and see" what happened. The MRIs apparently showed no change but it was obvious to the naked eye that my birthmark was growing.
My mom researched and found Dr. Milton Waner (she posted a few posts up) and his co-hort Dr. Levitin and they were honestly the best thing to ever happen to me! They are passionate about their work and love their patients (I feel like I'm their only patient)! I can't say enough good things about them
I started laser treatment with them the summer of 2005 and had a surgery to remove my malformation this past summer. I am having one more laser treatment this summer and can't wait to go see them (even though it means hanving another treatment)! I hope your son is doing well and I 100% recommend calling Dr. Waner's team. They are life savers!

Default hello

I am Nitin from India.
I have been going through homeopathic treatment for hemangioma of tongue since 2yrs and couldnt see any improvement.
Its only on thr rite side of my tongue. I dont feel any problem because to it like pain, or speech or eating problem.
If I go for laser or radiotherapy..does it gonna affect my voice?
How can I get rid of this...can't it be totally a normal tongue?

Default son has a hemangioma on his tongue too

Hi! I am so happy to finally find someone else who is dealing with this same situation. We have been dealing with this since he was around six months old when the his pediatric doctor noticed it during a routine visit. We were sent to a specialist who knew exactly what it was and told us to wait to see if it was going to grow. Well before he was four they did a MRI on him and sure enough it had began growing and it was running deeply through his tongue on the left side. He had his first laser treatment before he turned five. As of today he has had a total of 3 laser treatments. The biggest problem we have had that is when it is time to do the treatments again, he will get infections on his tongue. We have never met anyone else with this medical condition. The doctors have always been really nonchalant about it, so I guess we have too. My son is sometimes embarrassed by his tongue but the older he is getting it is not as bad. However, the doctor told us that he probably just have to keep getting these laser treatment or he may be able to just deal with it better when he gets older. He has six brothers and sisters who treat him the same as any other kid. Therefore, I think that has helped him not feel different. I am proud of how well he has done dealing with this hemangioma. The only bad part for us was after each laser treatment he was in a lot of pain. We worried about the swelling after the treatments but he did fine with that too. I am really happy to have someone to share this with because we just learned to deal with it alone. I live in a small town in N.C. and only few doctors could even do the laser treatments when we first found out. So I would love to hear from other's or get more insight about hemangioma's to really explain it better to my son.

Can you email me or post more details about your baby's condition? Where is the lesion located? How old is she/he? Can you describe what is uncomfortable/where? Other medical issues or problems, i.e. eating/drinking/reflux? Changes you have seen in the lesion?
