Default *NEW* 20 month old w/Hemangioma on scalp

I have a 20 month old daughter with a hemangioma on her head. I have read several stories but I haven't heard of any like hers. The doctors found a rather large tumor on her head during an ultrasound when I was five months pregnant. We didn't know it was a hemangioma until she was born. The doctors told us it was different than most because it was at it's largest size at birth which was about the size of a lemon and very full it would stick out over her ear. A few weeks after she was born it was already in the involution stages. At 20 months she hasn't had any treatments at all. It is now flat to her scalp but is not completely gone. I was told no surgery is needed at all but she will always have a small place on her head. Most of the stories I have read the hemangioma starts out small and gets larger. Has anyone gone through the same situation? I am just curious if it should completely go away or is it normal for her to have this flat light pink place on her scalp forever? It hasn't had any change in the last 10 months.

Hello, what you have described is called a RICH (rapidly involuting Congenital hemangioma).

It is hard to predict if the pink area will fully involute completely and it could be years of slow involuting. It might benefit your daughter to have laser to help with the residual hemangioma.

If you have questions about this option, I would encourage you to email Dr. Nelson with a photo. You can email him directly thru the vbf "ask the expert" on the main page of this site.
