Carson will be turning 6 years old on May 11th. In keeping with our birthday tradition for Carson, we would be honored if you made a donation to the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation. It is with your support that we have raised a total of $3,825 for VBF during the last four years as we’ve celebrated Carson’s birthday. VBF has designated a “Day of Awareness” on May 15th which coincides beautifully with Carson’s birthday and our desire to educate others about birthmarks and treatment. VBF does so many wonderful things around the world for families like ours and we want to pay it forward.
Carson has a love of soccer, basketball, dogs, the “UNO” card game, books, waffles, berries, and the color blue. He sings along to every song on the radio, but especially loves Christian music. He just lost his very first tooth, but his smile remains infectious. He is kind and tender hearted. He also happens to have a Port Wine Stain birthmark on the right side of his face. It doesn’t define who he is, but it has shaped his life differently. Carson has undergone THIRTY laser treatments already in an effort to keep his birthmark healthy and maintain the progress that has been made. He is one brave and resilient boy. He continues to embrace treatment and currently goes every 3-4 months. He will always have a need to go for laser treatment, as these birthmarks remain for life.
With a birthday on the horizon, I see a boy who has grown by leaps and bounds over the last year. Kindergarten remains one of my favorite years in school… what a joy to watch a child learn to read and write. Carson has had an amazing year in kindergarten, with many of my fears washed away. We placed Carson on a “504 Plan” at school to make accommodations for things like school days missed for laser treatment & recovery, the need to be inside while healing from treatment, the need for sunscreen and a hat whenever he’s outside, the need to minimize sun exposure, etc. I used Shutterfly and made a book about Carson’s birthmark and treatment, and we shared it with his classmates and a couple of the other kinder classes. The kids were supportive and kind, many of them lobbying to stay inside at recess to play with Carson as he healed from treatment. We really could not have asked for more.
To our family, friends, and church… we thank you for your support, prayers, and love as we have navigated this journey with Carson over the last 6 years. Our hearts are also filled with gratitude and love for Dr. Nelson and the staff at Beckman Laser Institute. Thank you for taking such great care of our son. Lastly, we want to give a big shout out to Carson’s kindergarten teacher, the one & only Mrs. Melton, who has lovingly taken care of our son throughout the school year. Words cannot express how much we appreciate all you’ve done for him.
